Purpose vs Goals
“What is my purpose in life?” I asked the wise monk. “What if I told you that you fulfilled it when you took an extra hour to talk to that kid about his life,” said the voice. “Or when you paid for the young couple inside the restaurant? Or when you shovelled the neighbour’s sidewalk? Or just gave someone a smile? Or tied your father’s shoes for him?”
We often equate our purpose with goal-based achievement. The universe isn’t interested in achievements…just our heart. When we choose to act out of kindness, compassion and love we are already aligned with our purpose.
To be happy and loved is all anybody really wants. It is the burning desire behind everything we do, everything we strive for. A successful life is one that is loved by the person living it.
If I were to offer some thoughts for consideration for goals for the new year. Why not make it simple. Choose one or two words and make that your goal for the year. Like compassion, happiness or love.
Plant your flag and say to the world this is who and what I am going to be. And make that your priority. Let this be the lens of simplicity that you filter everything else through.
